The Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) is a universal file format that can be created and
viewed on any computer running Windows, Mac OS, or any Unix variant (Linux, BSD, Solaris,
et cetera). Though the official Adobe Acrobat program to create PDFs is commercial,
the Adobe Reader
program to view PDFs is available free of charge.

The OpenDocument Text (ODT) format is a universal file format that can be created and viewed
on any computer running Windows, Mac OS, or any Unix variant (Linux, BSD, Solaris,
et cetera). The native program for creating and viewing ODT files is
OpenOffice.org, which
is a full office suite available completely free of charge.

The DOCument (DOC) format is the native file format used by
Microsoft Office Word, which is
available for Windows and Mac OS. If you have any version of Microsoft Office installed,
you can open this format. It can also be opened by OpenOffice.org (above) and some other office
suites.
